Summary ²

Sorex nanus are found in a variety of habitats, from rocky areas with alpines and pondersona pines into subalpine coniferous alpine habitats. Members of Soricidae have very similar characteristics, and are therefore hard to tell apart by their morphological characteristics. Sorex nanus are small (1.8-3.2g) with grayish-brown coloration in the summer months, and develop a pale gray pelage during winter months. Sorex nanus differs from other Soricidae members by it's smaller body size, and darker pelage as well as by the way of dentition, differences could only be noted with detailed examination of dentition in a laboratory setting. Scat (picture 2) and tracks (picture 3-4) between members of Soricidae are very similar and are hard to tell apart. This species is found in Iron county. There are currently no population estimates regarding Sorex nanus because they are rarely captured, but they are listed as a Least Concern according to the IUCN Red List.
