Small animal; the length of the body is variable, 9-14 cm. The mass usually does not exceed 45 g. The tail is 30-40% of the body length - up to 49 mm. The color of fur on the back can vary from light brown to darkish gray-brown sometimes with an admixture of brown-rusty tones. The abdomen is usually lighter: dirty gray, sometimes with a yellowish-buffy coating. The tail is either monochrome or slightly bicolour. The most brightly painted vole from the central strip of Russia. There is 46 chromosomes in the karyotype.
