THANK YOU ALL

I should have done this long ago, but I would like to take this opportunity tonight to thank each and every one of you who’s contributed to this project. It’s aim when I initially set it up, was to have a place where I could see observations of evident threats within a general local radius as another observer posting a turtle population I wasn’t aware of.

Thanks to you all I have been able to protect nests from foxes and continue to monitor them so thanks again, you’re genuinely helping to save a species. It’s gone further than that though, forming friendships with one fish expert in particular who I cannot thank enough for his generosity and sharing of knowledge regarding cichlids and other invasive freshwater fish. This had led to me doing surveys on the Pearl Cichlids for DPIRB, who in turn became aware of the short-fin eel problem we have at Hyde Park. Broadview Park and an undisclosed site in Hillary’s (I haven’t witnessed the third one myself but trust the source).

I would also like to make a point of mentioning Murdoch’s incredibly devoted work to protect the species. This is in no way a “rival” movement; Anthony and I communicate regularly and I implore anyone who cares for this species to make
an account on TurtleSAT and register for the next info session via the link below, which will be held sometime in July.
Please post your observations of nests that aren’t compromised there rather than here, or obscure the location when posting nests as TurtleSAT keep the locations private and I don’t want to risk the wrong set of eyes (illegal pet trade etc.) using such observations to steal the very thing this project aims to keep safe from harm.

So again, thank you all so much and I hope that you, too, keep safe from harm.

Love,

Dom.

One of at least two that are at Hyde park as a result of Atlantic Seafood Market in Northbridge selling live eels and Buddhists practicing Life Release not understanding the ecological impact.

A 2015 study on the turtle population conducted by UWA accidentally trapped one in the nets they had set up to catch the turtles for a population count. No successful recruitment has been noted at Hyde Park in over 15 years, with the city of Vincent willing to spend $5000 on a 2022 study again by UWA but unwilling to address the probable predation of turtle hatchlings by these eels. We know eggs are hatching, I’ve assisted numerous hatchlings in making it to the water since 2018, and it has taken me over 5 months to gain evidence of the eels, yet the city of Vincent says it’s a job for the department of fisheries, who say it’s not their job at all. Extremely frustrating.

I have also included an image of the much smaller/younger eels in the fish market, which the owner at first tried to tell me they were shut to deny my entry until a group of regular customers started speaking to him in a different language and I was able to sneak in and get the photo before he kicked me out. I am in no way anti-Buddhist or any religion, but I do believe the sale of exotic animals for the purpose of food should be illegal. How is it justified when it’s illegal to trade any live animal native to another state or territory as a pet? Fucking ridiculous.

Chasing a SWSN Turtle, which occurs nightly I just have never got a good photo so am resorting to screenshots from a video. Have been observing this since about March 2023. Often the cobbler bites a turtles foot and hangs on for >20 seconds as the turtle swims away. No serious harm is done to any of the 3 turtles in the small pond but curious about the cobblers origins.
