This project tracks the phenophases of plant populations in post-fire dune strandveld of Nelson Mandela University's nature reserve, which burned on 23 January 2019. Specifically, this project aims to produce data of a high temporal resolution (weekly observations) for as many plant species as possible from three habitats: (1) dune thicket on deep sands of dune crests; (2) dune fynbos-thicket mosaic on sand of inter-dune areas; and (3) dune fynbos on very shallow dune sands overlying quartzitic sandstone.
To have enough data to make trends in phenophases observable, this project will produce several apparent duplicate observations of plant species from the same populations/sites — this is intentional, so please bear with us! Many of the initial observations will also not be terribly exciting (a few blades of grass and a leaf here and there), but we hope to see some dazzling floral displays over the course of this project. Furthermore, we use a specific recording protocol, so membership for this project is restricted to our team.
