The black mangrove is found on coastal environments, near the water. This species has finger-like parts that stick out of the sand (from the roots). These are called pneumatophores. This is a shrub that has a seed pre-sprouted in the fruit. The leaf has a grey-ish underside and will deposit salt on the top of the leaf (see photo 3). The bark is black in appearance.

Black mangrove blooms in June or July. The nectar can be used in “mangrove honey”.

Seahorse Key is a coastal hammock. Black mangrove prefers the coastal tidal areas. It typically grows closer inland than other mangrove species.
