Over most of Bexar County, the Great Plains Ratsnake is the most common species of large, rodent eating snake. They are found throughout the county although are most common in the southern parts of the county along the edge of the Tamaulipan Biotic Province. They can be found in the wild areas throughout the city but are also common in residential areas.
Although harmless, Great Plains Ratsnakes may bite if provoked or handled. The bites are inconsequential and rarely break the skin. They are harmless to people and pets.
