Bayard Cutting Arboretum's Native Plant Collection Breezy Island

Breezy Island is the native plant collection at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River, NY. A large number of native and near native plants were installed after invasive bamboo, phragmites, honeysuckles, and ivies were removed from the site in 2017. The collection has continued to expand in scope and diversity since then, including planted as well as non-cultivated native volunteers that were existing prior to the work or have seeded themselves in on their own and been encouraged to flourish in their own niches.

Because of interest in which plants in this space are cultivated and which are not, I'm going to keep an ongoing (but not exhaustive) record here for those who might be interested or who may wish to reference known members of these species. Planted species will be marked casual observations. While some of our original planted species have self seeded into the area, those will also be marked casual as they are simply the regeneration of those planted populations by themselves in the area designated for them. This is a work in progress.

In some cases named varieties of plants have been chosen rather than straight species. These cultivars may have been chosen for a number of different reasons, but all with a specific purpose in mind, whether it was improved durability, improved flowering, availability, or some other feature ultimately deemed useful in the space. Straight species however dominate the plant list.

I will attempt to include high quality photos (also a work in progress) of these species and their key identifying features. An official running of these species as well as their associated fauna is kept, but this is meant to be more casual and accessible to inat users who may be curious which species in this area are planted by the staff and which are not. Wild volunteers are identified to the best of my abilities, but especially with some of the graminoids I could be mistaken! If there is a better ID and features I can look out for I'd be delighted to get better info so please do not hesitate to correct me if you see a mistake.
