Chrysops longicornis Macquart, 1838 - Identification

Female: Length 6-10 mm, yellow and blackish brown.
Eyes in life reddish with purple spots. Frons greyish pollinose except for brown basal callus and dull brown ocellar region. Clypeus shiny yellowish brown with a median yellow pollinose stripe which is broad above and acute below.
Thorax dark brown, longitudinal pale stripes indistinct, with striking distinct tufts of yellow hairs (on notopleural lobe, postalar callus, sides of the pronotum and pleura).
Abdomen variable: T1 usually pale brown below scutellum and yellowish at sides; T2 usually yellowish with median dark brown triangular, cordiform or arrowhead-shaped spot; following tergites vary from entirely yellow to entirely brown.
Femora yellow, tibia and fore tarsi yellowish brown, remaining tibiae pale yellowish with darkened apices.
Wings: Infusction of crossband uniform to posterior end of crossband (no clear spot).

Male: Eyes separated at midline; no median pollinose stripe on clypeus. Legs entirely dark brown except middle and hind tarsi which are yellowish.

Distribution: This species occurs widely in forest and savanna, throughout the entire Afrotropical region except the arid parts.
